A new 252,000 sf $55 million-dollar Middle school has two gymnasiums, state-of-the-art classrooms, science classrooms, a full kitchen and cafeteria, a library, and administrative areas. The air conditioning system has four 200-ton air cooled chillers for a total of eight hundred tons of cooling capacity. The innovative chiller design has the equipment in series to allow for a larger water temperature differential and colder leaving air temperatures. This allows for smaller pipe sizes and pumping requirements. Putting the chillers in series allows us to have better turndown to match the capacity of the school and save energy. The school utilizes LED lighting and energy saving controls to control the lights when not in use. The classrooms are all integrated with the latest technology. Due to the low water pressure in the area, we designed the building with a domestic water pump to ensure water pressure at all plumbing fixtures. We specified a fire pump to meet the needs of the fire sprinkler system for this building due to the low water pressure in the area.
